BOOK AND BOOK COVER DESIGN

FRESH! THE LOTUS QUEEN (Book Cover Design)
Illustration by Kaavad artist, Dwarka Prasad
The Lotus Queen is a historical fiction based in 14th century Chittor in the state of
present day Rajasthan. For this book cover, we worked with traditional craftsmen
from the state to design a kaavad, which we as a canvas to portray a key event in
the tale of Rani Padmini, the lotus queen.
The kaavad, which is a portable shrine, is an artform native to the Chittor district of
Rajasthan. It is used to tell many mythological stories, which, traditionally were
mainly the Mahabharat and the Ramayan. Today, the kaavad has transformed into
a modern storytelling device and there are numerous kinds of kaavads used today
whether for school children or adults.

FRESH! THE EMPEROR'S WRITINGS (Book Cover Design)
Calligraphy by Ashraf Ansari
This book, which is a historic fiction, chronicles the writings of Emperor
Akbar to his son, Jehangir. Historically, Akbar is thought to be illiterate
and there are no records of letters actually written in his hand. Since
the art of writing is so important to the book, we decided to calligraph
Akbar's entire name including his title, into a profile that is quintessentially Akbar.

LOVE IN A HEADSCARF (Book Cover)
This book is about Shelina’s quest to find a suitable husband
through an arranged marriage. For the cover of this humorous
book, we created a series of icons, on her scarf, that are
referred to in the book at key stages of the story. The headscarf
then becomes a metaphor for her life experiences that also give
her, the muslim identity she treasures.

SKIN INK (Book Cover)
For this book cover, we decided to do something different and work with a henna
artist to create the typography for Skin Ink. This gave the cover and concept a totally
fresh look and worked with the idea of the “cultural history of the tattoo”.

ALFRED HITCHOCK Book Covers (Concepts)
For this re-issue of stories from Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, we decided to use the very recognizable silhoutte of Hitchcock, but relate the
actual form of his outline to elements from crime scenes, such as blood stains, plastic bags (suffocation), cloth (for tieing someone) and arson.

dangerous and troubling and they slice into the everyday world to reveal its

BAULSPHERE (Book Cover and Illustration/Calligraphy for RandomHouse Books)
Bauls are mystics from Bengal who reach a state of trans through music. They
are nomads and their beliefs transcend religious barriers of Hinduism and Islam.
The word "Baul" is sanskrit for the wind. The title is inspired from this connection
as well as the music that they create wherever they go.

CELEBRATING FREEDOM 12151791 (Book Design)
This book, celebrates the launch of the Freedom Museum in Chicago. 12151791,
refers to the date—December 15, 1791,
when the Bill of Rights was ratified. We based the book design on the main installation in the museum, which consists of
letter-size metal plates with quotations on freedom die-cut through it. In the same spirit,
I decided to emphasize this
dimension of the plates, by using a dotted line throughout the book, with die-cuts appearing on the cover and the
section dividers.

FAIRS (Book Cover Design and Photography)
Fairs are something all of us can relate to. This book is about the nostaligia of Fairs. How, when and why they started and whether they are
going to die out or not? These are the oldest Ferris wheels in Austria
and were even featured in Orson Well's, The Third Man. The typography
reflects the nostalgia of those bygone days. This is a proposal for a book sent to Phaidon publishers.
